Common Hedge Problems We Solve
Routine Trimming Or Hedge Renovation?
A routine trim takes the hedge back to its existing shape, removing new growth so it stays neat and dense. Regular trimming actually encourages a hedge to thicken up.
Renovation is a bigger job for neglected hedges, cutting back hard into older wood. Beech, Hornbeam, Hawthorn, Holly, Box, Yew and Lonicera Nitida can often be reduced by up to half their height and width in one cut, with anything more drastic spread over several years.
A common approach is to cut the top and one side in the first year, then the other side the following year, so the hedge keeps enough foliage to recover. Deciduous hedges are best renovated in midwinter whilst dormant, and Evergreens in mid spring once the risk of frost has passed.
Leylandii & Conifer Hedges
Leylandii are one of the UK's most popular hedging plants because they grow so quickly, which is exactly why they get out of hand. Like most Conifers, they won't regrow from old, bare brown wood, so a cut that goes beyond the green foliage leaves a permanent bare patch.
That's why Conifer hedges need regular, light trimming, ideally up to three times a year between April and the end of August. Height can be taken down more easily than width, as side shoots gradually grow up to soften the cut.
If your Conifer hedge has already outgrown its space, we'll tell you honestly how far it can be brought back. Yew is the exception, as it regrows from old wood and can be renovated with a hard cut.
How Often Should A Hedge Be Cut?
- Privet and Box: two or three times during the growing season.
- Cherry Laurel: twice during the growing season.
- Leylandii: two or three times between April and August.
- Yew: twice, in summer and autumn.
- Beech and Hornbeam: once, in mid to late summer.
- Hawthorn: twice, in summer and autumn.
- Holly: once, in late summer.
- Informal and flowering hedges: once, straight after flowering.
Nesting Birds & Hedge Cutting
Hedges are important nesting sites, and the main nesting season runs from March to August.
Trimming during these months isn't illegal, but damaging an active nest is,
so every hedge is checked first and any section with a nest is left until the young have fledged.
High Hedges & Neighbour Disputes
If a neighbour's hedge is blocking your light, a friendly conversation is the best first step, and we're happy to carry out any reduction you both agree on. Where that fails, councils can deal with complaints under Part 8 of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003.
The law covers lines of two or more Evergreen or semi Evergreen trees or shrubs over two metres tall that block light or access. Deciduous hedges and single trees aren't included, councils charge a fee, and a hedge won't automatically be cut to two metres if a complaint is upheld.
Recent Hedge Work
For one customer, we restored an overgrown Leylandii hedge by taking a foot off the top, reshaping the sides and clearing every cutting.
For another, levelling a garden hedge made the entire garden feel bigger and let far more light in.
Hedge Trimming Questions
-
How much can I cut off an overgrown hedge?
Many broadleaved hedges can lose up to half their height and width in one go. Most Conifers can't be cut back into bare wood at all.
-
Can a brown Leylandii hedge be saved?
It depends on how much green growth remains. Areas cut back into old brown wood rarely regrow, so badly damaged sections sometimes need replacing.
-
How tall can a garden hedge be?
There's no general height limit. However, an Evergreen hedge over two metres that blocks a neighbour's light can lead to a high hedge complaint.
-
Do you take the hedge clippings away?
Yes, all hedge clippings are cleared from your garden, paths and the road outside, and all our green waste is recycled.
