Tree Services In Nottingham
As a long established tree surgeon in Nottingham,
WRS Tree Services Limited provides a comprehensive range of tree services to domestic and commercial customers throughout the region.
Tree Felling
Felling is the complete removal of a tree, and the method depends on how much clear ground surrounds it. Where there's space, the tree is brought down in one piece using directional felling, starting with a wedge shaped notch (known as a “sink”), cut into the side facing the planned direction of fall.
A back cut is then made from the opposite side, leaving a narrow strip of uncut wood called the “hinge”. The hinge controls the speed and direction of the fall, guiding the tree safely into a clear drop zone.
Sectional Tree Dismantling
In most gardens there isn't room for a tree to fall in one piece, so it's dismantled from the top down instead. A tree surgeon removes the crown and stem in sections, with heavier pieces lowered to the ground on ropes to protect roofs, fences and property borders.
Every job is planned around the space available, and our approach always puts the protection of your property first. More information about tree felling.
- Felling only when it's genuinely the best option.
- Sectional dismantling for confined gardens.
- Controlled lowering over buildings and borders.
- Stump removal and replanting options planned in advance.
Tree Pruning
Pruning covers a range of targeted operations, each chosen to solve a specific problem without changing the whole tree. Crown lifting raises the canopy for clearance, crown thinning lets more light through, and crown cleaning removes dead, damaged or diseased wood. Pollarding is also available for trees managed on a regular cutting cycle. More information about tree pruning.
- Crown lifting over paths, lawns and driveways.
- Crown thinning for dappled light.
- Deadwood removed where it poses a risk.
- Ivy cleared from the crown.
- Regular pollarding cycles undertaken.
Crown Reduction / Reshaping
A crown reduction lowers the height and narrows the spread of a tree by shortening its outer branches, rather than removing whole limbs. Each branch is cut back to a suitable growth point, usually a side branch at least a third of the diameter of the section being removed, which is strong enough to take over as the new tip.
Cutting to these growth points keeps wounds as small as possible and leaves the tree with a natural, rounded outline. Once the work is finished, the tree should still have a strong framework of healthy, small leaf-bearing branches, ready to produce dense foliage the following season.
Reshaping targets one side of the crown to rebalance a tree that has grown lopsided or lost limbs in a storm. Every cut we make is matched to the species and the tree's ability to cope. More information about crown reduction and reshaping.
- Height and spread reduced to agreed measurements.
- Branches cut back to suitable growth points.
- Wounds kept as small as possible.
- Natural shape retained.
- Lopsided or storm damaged crowns rebalanced.
Stump Grinding
Stump grinding uses a powerful machine fitted with a steel cutting wheel, lined with hardened tungsten carbide teeth, that spins at high speed and chips the wood away in thin layers.
The operator sweeps the wheel from side to side across the stump, lowering it slightly with each pass until the stump and the swollen base of the roots (known as the “root flare”), sit below ground level.
Stumps are typically ground to between 150mm and 300mm below the surface, which is deep enough to lay turf, create a new border or plant nearby. Large surface roots running out across a lawn can be traced and ground out at the same time, with the chippings used to backfill the hole or cleared away.
More information about stump grinding.
- Stumps and root flare ground 150mm to 300mm below ground.
- Chippings used to backfill the hole or taken away.
- Minimal disruption to surrounding lawns and borders.
- Full stump removal for building and foundation work.
Hedge Trimming
Regular trimming keeps a hedge dense, tidy and at a height that works for your garden. For hedges that have been left to grow unchecked, a harder reduction can reclaim lost space and light.
Conifers such as Leylandii need particular care, as most won't regrow from old brown wood. Our hedge trimming services are planned around bird nesting season, with careful checks for active nests before any cutting starts. More information about hedge trimming.
- Routine trims to keep hedges neat.
- Height and width reductions.
- Careful cutting of Leylandii and other Conifers.
- Checks for nesting birds.
Site Clearance
Our site clearance service includes the removing of trees, Conifers, hedges and scrub from land that's being prepared for development or landscaping. We're experienced in clearing sites for housing developments, property developers and other industrial sites. Large machinery can be brought in where needed to keep the job efficient. All green waste from the site clearance is recycled.
- Trees and Conifers cleared ahead of new development.
- Large machinery brought in for bigger clearances.
- Work completed efficiently to minimise disruption.
- All green waste recycled.
Powerline Clearance
Trees growing into overhead power lines create a serious risk of power cuts, fires and electrocution. Our Nottinghamshire tree surgeons are trained to carry out powerline clearance, cutting vegetation back safely from overhead lines.
- Safe clearance around overhead lines.
- Team equipped and trained for this work.
- Lower risk of outages and fires.
Firewood & Mulch
Because we recycle the timber and green waste from our work, we produce naturally seasoned firewood and mulch as a byproduct. Both are available to purchase.
Seasoned logs burn more cleanly and efficiently than freshly cut wood, making them ideal for log burners and open fires. Our mulch is great for suppressing weeds and holding moisture in garden borders.
- Naturally seasoned logs.
- Mulch for beds and borders.
- Made from recycled timber.
Tree Planting
Planting the right tree in the right place is the best way to avoid problems over time. We'll help you choose a tree species that suits your soil, the space available and the distance to nearby buildings.
Replacement planting is also worth considering after a tree has been felled. It's often required when a protected tree is removed with council consent.
- Species chosen to suit your space.
- Replacement planting after felling.
- Careful planting for a strong start.
Lopping & Topping
Lopping and topping involves cutting branches or the top of a tree back to an arbitrary point, usually leaving large, bare stubs. It's a crude, heavy handed method generally carried out by inexperienced tree cutters.
THIS IS NOT PRUNING AND SHOULD BE AVOIDED!
The stubs left behind are open to decay, and the tree responds by producing a mass of weak, fast growing shoots that break easily.
What starts as a quick fix leaves a tree that looks worse, becomes less safe and costs more to manage in the years ahead.
If you've been offered lopping or topping, we'd strongly advise against it. A properly specified crown reduction or pruning treatment can achieve the same goal without harming the tree.
